| Natural resource use and management - National level

Overview

This page displays the tourism industry's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and its relation with economic measures. This page also includes measures related to emissions from tourist consumption of natural resources, and the emissions of different transport modes. We are looking into additional datasets related to the quality of water, air, land, natural quiet and environmental health.

At the top right corner of each chart, you will find a button Download icon, black arrow pointing down to a black rectangle.. Click on it to annotate and/or export the graph to a file (PNG, JPG or SVG), or to download its underlying data as a JSON or CSV file.

At the bottom of each section, you will find the "How to read this graph" area with more information about how to interpret the chart and potential caveats around the data used.

If you are having difficulties using this tool, please contact us and we will be happy to help.

Tourism industry contributions to emissions vs GDP and employment

This graph shows the percentage of greenhouse gas emissions attributable to tourism-related industries, compared to the percentage of GDP and employment attributed to said industries.

Show detailed description

How to read this graph:

The 3 lines on this graph all move along the y-axis using the same units, a percentage of either the gross emissions of New Zealand's System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) account, total GDP or total employment.

Tourism contribution to greenhouse gas emissions

This graph shows the amount of greenhouse gas emitted from the perspective of the final consumer.

Show detailed description

How to read this graph:

In this graph, there are four lines that stack on top of each other. It allows you to quickly compare the emissions from the different categories displayed and estimate the total emissions.

Show detailed description

Greenhouse gas emissions from transport

This graph shows the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are generated from transport in Aotearoa New Zealand, including domestic and international aviation.

Show detailed description

How to read this graph:

This graph shows the amount of greenhouse gas produced by the different transportation modes. * Note that international transport modes are not included in the total series, which only includes emissions attributed to New Zealand.

Show detailed description

Greenhouse gas emissions from transport as proportion of total emissions

This graph shows the proportion of gross emissions (excluding Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry or LULUCF) attributed to the different transportation modes in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Show detailed description

How to read this graph:

This graph shows the percentage of greenhouse gas produced by the different transportation modes in relation to the total greenhouse gas emission, excluding Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry. * Note that international transport modes are not included in the denominator used to find each proportion (i.e. the gross emissions attributable to New Zealand).
